HARDENER HW 5542

Main features

  • 2 to 3 Minute AW 5540 Work Life
  • 1:1 AW 5540 Volume Mixing
  • Automatic Mixing and Dispensing

Product Description

HARDENER HW 5542 is a standalone polyurethane adhesive hardener used in two Huntsman systems: ARALDITE AW 8680/HW 5542 and the legacy ARATHANE AW 5540/HW 5542. In the AW 5540/HW 5542 system, the red liquid hardener supports a 1:1 resin-to-hardener ratio by volume, a 2 to 3 minute work life at 25 deg C, and automatic mixing and dispensing. System-specific cure and performance values remain limited to the specific resin pairing in which they were measured.

Key features

  • AW 5540 Work Life: The AW 5540/HW 5542 system has a 2 to 3 minute work life at 25 deg C.
  • AW 5540 Volume Mixing: The system uses a 1:1 resin-to-hardener ratio by volume.
  • Automatic Mixing and Dispensing: This processing method applies to the AW 5540/HW 5542 paired system rather than to the hardener alone.

Applications

Hardener component for polyurethane adhesive systems; the legacy AW 5540 pairing covers SMC, fiberglass-reinforced plastics, cured plastics, and metals.

Specific Gravity
Specific gravity (SG) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance; equivalently, it is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the mass of a reference substance for the same given volume. For liquids, the reference substance is almost always water (1), while for gases, it is air (1.18) at room temperature. Specific gravity is unitless.

Physical Properties
Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application
