  • 2-Minute Open Time
  • 40-Second Handling Strength
  • 7,000 cP Warm-Application Viscosity

Product Description

3M Scotch-Weld PUR Adhesive TE040 is a one-component, 100% solids reactive polyurethane hot-melt adhesive supplied as a black extrudable solid. Typical viscosity is 7,000 cP at 121 deg C by Brookfield Thermosel, and typical open time is two minutes for a 3.2 mm bead on a nonmetallic surface. After bond formation, typical handling time is 40 seconds to support a 5 psi tensile load. Moisture curing subsequently develops the urethane bond, with typical cured Shore D hardness 35. The adhesive bonds wood, fiber-reinforced plastics, other plastics, metal, and glass for furniture, cabinetry, profile wrapping, and panel assembly.

Key features

  • 7,000 cP application viscosity: The typical value for the black grade is measured at 121 deg C by Brookfield Thermosel.
  • 40-second handling time: This typical minimum interval is the time for the bond to support a 5 psi tensile load, not full moisture cure.
  • Reactive one-component PUR: The 100% solids hot melt combines initial handling strength with subsequent moisture-curing urethane bond development.

Applications

Wood or plastic bonding for furniture and cabinetry; profile wrapping for windows and doors; panel assembly.

Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application

Mechanical Properties
Elongation
Elongation is the process of lengthening something. It is a percentage that measures the initial, unstressed, length compared to the length of the material right before it breaks. It is commonly referred to as Ultimate Elongation or Tensile Elongation at break.
