3M CA5

Main features

  • 12 to 60-Second Handling Strength
  • 2,000 cP Uncured Viscosity
  • CID A-A-3097 Type II Class 3

Product Description

3M Scotch-Weld Instant Adhesive CA5 is a single-component ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive that cures at room temperature for industrial bonding of many rubbers, plastics, and metals. Its typical 2,000 cP viscosity is useful for limited gap filling on rough or uneven surfaces, and its slower setting rate allows more time for part alignment. Typical time to handling strength is 12 to 60 seconds. The adhesive meets CID A-A-3097 Type II Class 3. Shelf life is 15 months from manufacture when refrigerated at 0 to 4 deg C in original packaging; it should reach room temperature before opening.

Key features

  • 2,000 cP uncured viscosity: The typical liquid viscosity supports limited gap filling on rough or uneven bonding surfaces.
  • 12 to 60-second handling time: This typical interval describes handling strength during room-temperature bonding, not completion of cure.
  • CID A-A-3097 Type II Class 3: The ethyl cyanoacrylate grade meets this material specification.

Applications

Gap filling; industrial bonding; rubber, foam, and glass bonding; instant bonding.

Specific Gravity
Specific gravity (SG) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance; equivalently, it is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the mass of a reference substance for the same given volume. For liquids, the reference substance is almost always water (1), while for gases, it is air (1.18) at room temperature. Specific gravity is unitless.

Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application
