3M 3779TC

Main features

  • 7,000 cP Melt Viscosity at 191 deg C
  • 25-Second Open Time
  • 149 deg C Load Resistance at 14 kPa

Product Description

3M Hot Melt Adhesive 3779TC is an amber, 100% solids thermoplastic hot-melt adhesive for industrial assembly, including bonding wood, plastics, vinyl, metal, and glass. It is applied at a recommended 177 to 196 deg C and has a typical viscosity of 7,000 cP at 191 deg C. Typical open time is 25 seconds for a 3.2 mm bead on a nonmetallic surface at 24 deg C. The typical temperature-resistance result is 149 deg C under a 14 kPa dead load, distinct from the 163 deg C ball-and-ring melt point by ASTM E28-67. Supported uses include electronics potting, wire-harness attachment, headliners, and trim.

Key features

  • 7,000 cP melt viscosity: The typical value is measured at 191 deg C with Brookfield Thermocel spindle 27 at 10 rpm.
  • 25-second open time: The typical maximum application-to-joining interval uses a 3.2 mm bead on a nonmetallic surface at 24 deg C.
  • 149 deg C dead-load temperature resistance: This typical result is the highest temperature at which the bond supports a 14 kPa load.

Applications

Wire-harness attachment; electronics potting; metal and plastic bonding in appliances; headliner attachment; trim attachment.

Viscosity
Viscosity is a measurement of a fluid’s resistance to flow. Viscosity is commonly measured in centiPoise (cP). One cP is defined as the viscosity of water and all other viscosities are derived from this base. MPa is another common unit with a 1:1 conversion to cP. A product like honey would have a much higher viscosity -around 10,000 cPs- compared to water. As a result, honey would flow much slower out of a tipped glass than water would. The viscosity of a material can be decreased with an increase in temperature in order to better suit an application

Thermal Properties
Flash Point
The flashpoint of a solvent is the lowest possible temperature at which it can vaporize to form an ignitable vapor. Flashpoint is often confused with “autoignition temperature”, which is the temperature at which a solvent ignites without an ignition source.
288 °C
Temperature Resistance
Temperature resistance is the maximum temperature that the material or product can withstand for a period of time. The temperatures listed should be considered as guidelines for an operating temperature of about 30 minutes. Typically, the material can withstand much longer times at temperatures about 20°C lower and can withstand much higher temperatures for short, intermittent times.
